Buffalos Rugby Raise Millions for Vientiane Street Kids!

The Vientiane Buffalos took to the streets on the morning of the 9th May in an organized fun-run raising awareness for International Day Against Child Labour. The run was undertaken as part of the club's commitment to support a community project every year. This year, sponsorship raised was in support of Peuan Mit, a joint project between the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare and Friends International to help street children and other vulnerable children and youth. Funds raised by the club went towards supporting sporting opportunities within their activities.

The team spent a long evening visiting bars and restaurants around the city to mobilise support for this important cause. The team raised a total of six million kip and Club President Garry Wright highlighted the importance of the funds raised by saying that 'sport can play an important role in developing key life skills for children and we as a club are proud to provide support for children who may face challenges in participating in sport. As a rugby club, we are also proud to support community development in Vientiane and I would like to thank those who so generously offered their support to us and to those players who ran the race and put efforts into raising sponsorship'.

Vientiane Buffalos and National Team Coach Steve Doyle also commended the team for their efforts and committed himself to participate in the next fundraising initiative of the club and said that 'rugby is not only a sport to be played, it thrives on strong community links and provides opportunities for friendship and life skills development for all players, particularly children and youth'. He also commented proudly that many of the players participating in the efforts were members of the Lao PDR National Team squad who will be playing in Brunei in July against Indonesia, Cambodia and Brunei.

The Vientiane Buffalos are a rugby team based in Vientiane and their next game will be held on Saturday, 16th June against a British Bangkok team at the technical school opposite hospital 103 with the game kicking off at 2PM; please come along and support your local team.
